## How to deduct breaks from your hours- Enter your Start and End time for each day.
- Add up your unpaid breaks for the day and enter the total in the Break field.
- Turn on Deduct breaks so that total is subtracted from your hours.
- (Optional) Turn on Include Payment Information and set your Regular payment rate to see your pay.
- Read your Total Time and Gross Pay in the summary.
Which breaks should you deduct?
Deduct only the breaks that are unpaid. Enter the total of all unpaid breaks for the day in the Break field — whether that’s one meal break or several short ones. Paid rest breaks stay in your hours, so leave those out. The calculator subtracts exactly what you enter, nothing more.
Multiple breaks in one day
The calculator uses one Break value per day, so add your breaks together first. For example, two unpaid 20-minute breaks become a single 40-minute entry. This keeps the tool simple while still giving you an accurate total.
Example
You work 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM and take two unpaid breaks: 30 minutes for lunch and 15 minutes in the afternoon.
- 7:00 to 4:00 = 9 hours 0 minutes.
- Total breaks = 30 + 15 = 45 minutes.
- Minus 45 minutes = 8 hours 15 minutes (8.25 in decimal).
- At a $21.00/hour rate: $173.25 gross pay for the day.
