How does California overtime work?

In California, hours over 8 in a workday are paid at 1.5×, and hours over 12 in a day are paid at 2× (double-time). Overtime also applies on the 7th consecutive day of a workweek. These rules are stricter than the federal 40-hour standard, and the calculator applies them for you when you choose the California option.

Example

You work an 13-hour day at $20.00/hour in California.

• First 8 hours at $20.00 → $160.00 (regular).
• Hours 9–12 (4 hours) at $30.00 (1.5×) → $120.00 (overtime).
• Hour 13 (1 hour) at $40.00 (2×) → $40.00 (double-time).
• Day total: $320.00.
